Getting to know our ELL learners is very important in what we do as teachers. Understanding our students where they are academically helps us to tailor our lesson plan. Often times these students have a good academic background and often they come from small towns where they have just gotten the basic or nothing at all. Not only does learning come to play in our daily duties in the classroom also understanding our students cultural, language and individual needs. Zeroing in on the students needs is important because we need to help students reach their maximum academic potential in the classroom and in society. Making the student feel comfortable to come to you for help is also another important tool because this opens doors for the student to thrive.

Culture often plays a big part when it comes to ELL learners. Depending from where they are coming from I know that in Puerto Rico and any other Spanish culture we respect our elders. We say yes mam and sir. We are grateful for what we have and we value family and friendships. I am sure that many other cultures are the same. Culture, and language are things to look for in the students because it is also seen when meeting with a parent about a that student.
