Scenario Response 9
Scenario 9
- Whole Class
- Whole class instruction should be teacher guided. With the teacher directing discussion and being a model on how to dissect and self reflect based off the content. Modeling for the learners promotes a learners self-advocacy in their education.
- Buddies
- Pairings should be explicit in the reading capabilities of each learner. Pairing a lower reader with a higher reader sounds like it would assist the lower reader. However, this often leads to the lower reader being left behind in the "how" in obtaining information. Pairing similar reading level learners they both have to strain and workout the "how" which is what we are aiming to do with creating independent learners. Providing a KWL chart or other graphic organizers to the pairings should assist in them developing this skill.
- Small Groups
- Small groups are a great way to get input from multiple perspectives. Groupings should still be explicit, just as with buddies, but can be a little more various. Personally, I have used a "Chunk N' Chew" method paired with a "Think-Ink-Share" method that provides each learner with opportunities to self-correct and feel accomplished.
- Individual
- Individual can be more complex, because often times lower readers lack confidence in their response. So, if they have no other example to go by (buddy, teacher, or group) then they feel discouraged. In the past, I have provided graphic organizers that "chunk n chew" the reading and highlight specific aspects that are being asked about later on. As the reading continues, the learners are individually tasked with highlighting and responding to the questions on their own. I found this to work quite well as it provides an initial first step that many lower readers are scared to make.
