Mod 16 Discussion: Modifications for the Second Language Learner
Module 16 Discussion
- Intervention or Other Literacy Time
- This type of modification is very intensive in how it supports learners. It has a heavier focus on preemptive reading strategies with a focus on vocabulary and pronunciation.
- Collaborative Work
- This form of modification allows for peer and teacher intervention. Grouping ELL's with varying reading levels provides insight on the thought processes and reading skills from other learners; guided through teacher instruction.
- *Additional Modification- Visual Aids
- Visual Aids provide all learners, especially ELLs, another form of soaking in the content. Pictures, symbols, and more help form a connection between a phrase, word, or event to its meaning.
- *Additional Modification- Simplify Language
- Simplifying the language of the lesson makes the content easier for everyone to absorb. Any words that are necessary for the lesson to be effective can be targeted through explicit vocabulary learning. Anything that can be simplified should to ensure a stronger learning gain.
I agree that visual aides are an important modification that is useful not just for ELL students, but all students.
