Mod 1 Discussion: Classroom Implications of Linguistic Theory
Module 1 class implications
It all comes back to the magical concept of student relations. When a student is corrected while learning a new skill that they deem as scary or of high risk, such as learning a new language they need to feel that the teacher is on their side cheering them on rather than nick picking. This can sometimes feel detrimental to the process however as the teacher continues to model correct language usage while engaging with the student, eventually the student will adapt to the spoken language rules used around them. This creates a low-risk environment that is encouraging to the student. Another positive is that the student can start to self-monitor and also learn from peers as they are focusing on communication rather than the correct grammar.
A useful way to promote this skill is through modeling self-correction out loud, whether it is planned or a true accident both are immensely helpful for students. A step further would be to open it up to peer feedback.
