Module 3 Discussion: Moving Students Into a New Culture
Moving Students Into a New Culture
Thinking back to my childhood, I moved around a lot. Fortunately I always moved during the summer, so I didn’t have to change schools mid-year. However, starting the year at a brand new school can be intimidating to say the least - especially when youre moving states! While most students already know each other and have friends, being the new guy you often feel left out, misplaced, or lost - you don’t know anybody. The “initial period” is always the toughest, most uncomfortable. Everything is new. You learn by trial and error. Having a classroom enviroment that is safe and welcoming makes a huge difference. In my classroom, anytime we get a new student, I elect someone to be their buddy for the day. They show them to their seat, give them a tour of the classroom, show them to lunch/recess, etc. This takes away the fear and anxiety of feeling leftout or lost. Of course, all students are encouraged to help our new friend and make them feel welcomed.
