We should refrain from correcting students. According to the article, children will learn by imitating. If what they've imitated was not learned, they will mimic or practice what they've seen. I've noticed second language students talking to themselves and making hand gestures to try to understand what was said or to make things clearer. The student watches or monitors the speaker or writer to make sure what they are doing lines up with what they've just seen. My second language students use facial expressions when they do or do not understand something. I witness frustration or joy when something is done correctly or incorrectly. Second language students make connections when they are able to draw pictures. This is an alternative form of communication for them. It displays what they cannot say. Mimicking, talking things out, & practicing are some self-correction tools that are used by second language learners.
