I dealt with a similar issue my first year of teaching. I did not use my background to connect. I was the teacher who got to business and raised my voice if kids weren't working. But I didn't use our mutual love of music. Out of school, I am a musician/rapper/songwriter. Over that summer, I started thinking of ways to incorporate my love of music into education. When i moved to 2nd grade, I started writing jingles, short raps and even covers of popular songs all focused on content that my students needed to learn for grammar, mathematics and science. My students loved learning the songs and it made them more invested in their day to day academics as well.
