Scenario Response 4
Since students are only at school for a limited time each day, it is important that their learning is reinforced at home. There are many ways that families of English language learners can support their families. For example, they could take the idea of a word wall that you often see in the classrooms and create a version of this at home. Even something as simple as using magnets to create a collection of words on their refrigerator could go a long way in improving the entire family’s vocabulary.
Families could also set aside a time every day to read together. Even if the student’s families are unable to read together in English, there are a wide variety of bilingual books available that all members of the family could work on together. Many people outside of the education system do not understand the importance of repeated reading. Many times adults will get frustrated when their children want to read the same books over and over. However, you could make sure that the families understand that reading the same books over and over are an excellent way for students to build their vocabularies and comprehension skills.
