First, I would learn as much as I could about the culture they come from so that I can begin to reach out to the students. I would share information with other students, especially peer partner students to help them understand the new student may have some difficulties with the differences. I would have visual representations of as many items as possible to help communicate classroom procedures and expectations.
As an administrator, I would notify the teacher of the expected students. I would also give the teacher support in finding information about the culture students come from. I would contact ESL teachers and the district ESOL office for assistance creating resources, enhancing lesson plans, and learning supportive strategies.
