Cultural Sensitivity- The teacher should always be aware of cultural sensitivity as it can pertain to a number of aspects relating to the cultural diversity within the classroom. a teacher should develop a welcoming environment to the parents of ESOL students by parent conferences, letters home informing them of student progress or other items of interest. Being aware of cultural differences within the classroom can bring a sensitivity to the classroom as a whole.
4. Home language and its relationship to a child's academic process- The language predominately used in the home has a great impact on the child's academic progress as a whole. It can influence the child's ability to pick up the new second language as it may or may not be conducive to the advancement or successfully implementing the new language. It's important the teacher know what language is being used in the home so they can relate to the child's academic struggles or achievements more readily.
5. Linguistic Routines of incorporating phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics in an everyday routine encourages young readers to used strategies taught acquire successful reading comprehension and language usage skills.
6.The impact of learning a 2nd language on all content areas- the usage of a 2nd language across all academic content areas helps the student incorporate the strategies they have been taught to be used in mathematics vocabulary, science vocabulary ect.
Scaffolding- Scaffolding to the struggling reader is a great way to help them acquire the skills necessary to become a better reader. Using 2 and 3 time reads, read a louds, peer and small group reading, using open book exams with struggling writers, ect.
High quality early childhood literacy- The more a child is exposed to literacy the more adept they become in understanding and comprehending the meaning of words used in conversations. The better readers and more adept to speaking and reading as they age. Parental involvement is crucial for young readers. Parents should read to children and encourage them to learn to read.
Structured speaking and listening- Helps students to become more socially adept in speaking within a group setting and less fearful of being accepted. Structured whole group class discussions or individual or joint peer presentations are a good way to encourage participation.
