Mod 11 Mid-Course Reflection and Self-Assessment
- Language as a system of learning is crucial in an society. The development of that system is indicative of the society's learning and advancement of the world around them. In order to advance in the present society one must have a good understanding of the language of that society. The more understanding of the language and better usage of that language the better able the person is to advance and able to acquire a better life for themselves and their family.

Acquiring the appropriate usage of language requires a system that is listed above with a child’s ability to process through the stages of language development.
2. The relevance of including culture into your curriculum is critically important to students in the classroom. When a teacher incorporates culture she demonstrates to the students that each student matters and is an integral part of that classroom. it helps all students understand that each culture is different and acceptance of those difference can promote better understanding and cooperation in the classroom and in society. This can be done by cross-cultural posters in the classroom, discussions of various and diverse cultures within the classroom, incorporating vocabulary and other terminology usage within lessons, reading cross-cultural stories that help promote a better understanding of those cultures among students. These are just some of the ways in which a teacher can make the classroom more culturally diverse.
4. Home language and its relationship to a child's academic process- The language predominately used in the home has a great impact on the child's academic progress as a whole. It can influence the child's ability to pick up the new second language as it may or may not be conducive to the advancement or successfully implementing the new language. It's important the teacher know what language is being used in the home so they can relate to the child's academic struggles or achievements more readily.
5. Linguistic Routines of incorporating phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics in an everyday routine encourages young readers to used strategies taught acquire successful reading comprehension and language usage skills.
6.The impact of learning a 2nd language on all content areas- the usage of a 2nd language across all academic content areas helps the student incorporate the strategies they have been taught to be used in mathematics vocabulary, science vocabulary ect.
Scaffolding- Scaffolding to the struggling reader is a great way to help them acquire the skills necessary to become a better reader. Using 2 and 3 time reads, read a louds, peer and small group reading, using open book exams with struggling writers, ect.
High quality early childhood literacy- The more a child is exposed to literacy the more adept they become in understanding and comprehending the meaning of words used in conversations. The better readers and more adept to speaking and reading as they age. Parental involvement is crucial for young readers. Parents should read to children and encourage them to learn to read.
Structured speaking and listening- Helps students to become more socially adept in speaking within a group setting and less fearful of being accepted. Structured whole group class discussions or individual or joint peer presentations are a good way to encourage participation.
