  1. Language as a system of learning – This is important because language is the foundation of all skills (verbal or non-verbal language).  It helps in the gaining and retaining of information, the basics of understanding of communication and how to communicate, comprehension of text and reading, and finally it helps support vocabulary development. Communication is the 2-way roadway for and between the learner and the teacher.  It too is the pathway from teacher to home.   Without communication and language – one would not be able to connect to the world around them.  Needs/wants/desires would not be able to be met.  There would be no way to ask for help, or receive it.
  2. The relevance of including culture in your curriculum – Bringing culture into the classroom and curriculum help reach all learners.  Connections help support student engagement, family involvement, and overall achievement of students.
  3. Cultural sensitivity - is important because it makes all learners feel valued, respected, welcomed and a part of the learning community.  Again when students feel apart of something, they tend to engage more… more engagement leads to higher levels of learning.  When you have more learners engaged, more deeper and core content can be taught with substance, enriched opportunities, and tailored learning experiences that will bring new life to the classroom.
  4. Home language and its relationship to a child’s academic progress – This is critical to consider as each child/family/culture has a way they communicate.  Each child’s home language should be embedded into the normalcy as it helps them with academic progress, success and development as a student.   If the child can communicate at home, then there is the capacity to “learn”… If a sound teach can help create the “carry over/transition skills” than the sky’s the limit for that childs success.
  5. Linguistic routines – This is impornat because as one know routine/structure/system help all learners.  Embedding linguistic routines into the room creates a sense of normalcy, what is coming/expected/flow in the day.
  6. The impact of learning a second language on all content areas – This is important because learning happens in all aspects of a childs day at school.  Each environment is different, but it is impormta theat the skills acquired are able to be transferered to other areas, subjects, classrooms, teachers/personnel, etc.
  7. Scaffolding – is important as it builds skill levels of students and allows them to find success at a pace, stepping-stones that works for them.  It creates challenge and as well helps bridge the gap for learners struggling with new information.
  8. High quality early childhood literacy – this is important as the younger children engage in reading/literacy, the higher the likelihood they will be able to build, grow the attain the foundation for skills for higher cognitive processing and critical thinking skills.   Teach them at a young age so that there are more opportunities to practice, find a comfort for and a s well a passion for reading, learning and growing as a student.
  9. Structured speaking and listening – this is critical as it promotes high levels of student participation in meaningful and purposeful interactions, dialoguing, conversations with staff/peers that support the growth and development of social skills.
