Scenario Response 6
Integrating a FBA plan can be challenging to incorporate an ELL's point of view and cultural attitudes/responses.
A teacher needs to be mindful of the various aspects of the ELL's point of view, their culture and the way their culture reacts to various circumstances. Fear can be a motivating factor with young students who do not quite understand their environment.
Using an assessment tool such as FBA to track certain behaviors is a good way to provide feedback and design positive corrective behaviors to young students. Parent conferences and behavioral plans are also a good way to approach a student who is experiencing culture shock. Students who experience culture shock is more likely to display inappropriate behaviors.
The teacher must use her understanding and knowledge to incorporate appropriate solutions to such problems. The way a teacher handles these situations can have a positive or negative impact on student behavior. It is critical that the teacher track inappropriate behaviors then demonstrate positive and appropriate responses so students can view how they can better handle situations the next time they arise.
