Module 4 Discussion: Home Language Survey

I think that Question Number 6 on the HLS is crucial, regarding the student’s date of entry into the United States. A recent date of entry may suggest psychological or social factors that should be considered, such as culture shock or emotional stress. A later date of entry that also corresponds with lower English-speaking proficiency might suggest inadequate previous education or that the student is undoing some of their English-learning skills by over relying on their L1 at home or in their community.

I would not modify any of the HLS questions as they stand.
