During the first two videos, the teachers were actively assessing their students during their participation in the lessons.  I especially liked the second video showing the full lesson of the teacher working on sorting objects using common attributes.  Modeling for the students while actively encouraging them to participate helped them gain confidence in the lesson.  Then during the differentiation portion/independent work, the students were able to apply what they learned as well as self assess.  Not only did the teacher get to assess while the students were working independently, but then she was able to gain an even deeper knowledge of how the students felt about their own learning.  That went along with the third video showing how the students can be shown the data surrounding their learning in order to see how they were growing and where they could still improve.  I like using the self assessment because it really causes the kids to take ownership rather than just be told how they're doing.  I think it's important because even if a student is struggling, being able to acknowledge that can help them more effectively ask for help when they need it during their learning.  It also helps us because we may be missing where a student feels they're falling behind and then we can adjust our lessons accordingly.
