In order to achieve the following objectives, the following would be implemented:

  • Students will be able to be sensitive to the needs of other students.
  • Students will learn to work cooperative with all students for the entire school year.
  • Students will be able to handle jigsawing groups to experience a variety of peer feedback throughout the year.
  • Students will advance language proficiencies by working cooperatively as mentors and mentees.

In order to promote the listed items above, I would most likely create variations in groups with mixed levels of ability, cognitive understanding, levels of language, etc. I prefer in my teaching practice to consider "groups" anything that may include "pair/partners" to anything that is 3 or more students (to include support staff into this dynamic as well).  I typically look for strength/weaknesses of the individuals, and try to implement grouping that would be "complimentary" to the other... Ex: in a peer tutoring or partner model, if you child is good at kicking a soccer ball, then pair them off with another that may need extra support.  I feel that for the most part the groups should facilitate higher level functioning, highest levels of cooperation, and promote students supporting students in obtaining the goal/task/objective.

I agree. A classroom should be conducive for all students to feel comfortable in the learning process. All students should be contributors to each other's leaning processes either through mentoring of being mentored. They should also be respective of each other.
