Scenario Response 6
I would start my Functional Behavioral Assessment plan by gathering information about the student's cultural background - language, traditions, customs, experiences - by consulting with the student's family, cultural liasons, or other staff members familiar with the student's cultural background. Then I would spend time observing the student in various settings and pay close attention to any verbal or non-verbal cues that may indicate the student's feelings or frustrations. I would next design interventions that respect and incorporate the student's cultural background. Finally by creating a classroom environment that embraces cultural diversity I hope to foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity where the student feels comfortable expressing their needs and emotions.
Awareness of culture is essential in a FBA plan because it helps to ensure that assessments and interventions are fair and unbiased, assists in identifying triggers and stressors that may be contributing to challenging behaviors, generates trust and strengthens the student-teacher relationship, and increases engagement and motivation to participate.
