Jin's struggle to understand the first prompt indicates that he may still be at the early stages of language development, particularly when it comes to reading and understanding written text. In order to better understand his writing readiness and prepare Jin for future writing events I will need to assess his writing readiness through smaller writing tasks or assignments to identify specific areas the require improvement. Then, before the next writing exam I will provide him with pre-teaching of key vocabulary and sentence structures that are likely to appear in the prompts, offer explicit instruction on test-taking strategies, offer support during in-class writing assignments by giving him graphic organizers, sentence starters, and/or word banks. I would also ensure peer support by partnering Jin with a native English speaker or a more advanced English fluent ELL during class activities.
