Reading and Writing strategies to support student learning in grades:
Grade 1-Read books of interest to kids and stuff which they can relate to. Play with words in the book, making kids look at these words for sound them out and writing them. Read to students, making reading fun and interesting. Look at pictures in the book, Sound out new words when they are reading and spelling. Identify sight words and high-frequency words in a text.
Grade 3-Create anchor charts with students, Summarize using basic signal words, practie inferring, determine what is important in the storyline, writing should show a story unfolding, sequence of events should be clear as student writes, let students elaborate their thinking not just stop with one or two sentences, use graphic organizer to help them put their thoughts in order.
Grade 6-students should be supporting claims and finding evidence in the text by highlighting, and writing, students needs to use an introduction, body, and conclusion to their writing, using video, audio, charts, visual aid, use of vocabulary words and opportunities to use these words within their writing prompts.
Grade 9- by this stage teachers need to introduce cognitive strategies for effective reading activating, inferring, monitoring-clarification, questioning, searching, summarizing, and visualizing-organizing. Use of graphic organizers for reading and writing, learning to use the same writing as reading,
Grade 11-Make inferences from the text, annotate, and determine the author's purpose based on evidence in the text, analyze rhetorical techniques, point of view, and word choices and tone contribute to the meaning of the text. Provide students with words on the wall, learn new words and meaning,
