Module 20 Revisiting Our Goals for This Course
Module 20: Discussion
Share anything else you'd like to learn about language acquisition for second language learners, and what might need further research.
My goals for the course were to better understand the field of linguistics and learn strategies to improve my classroom instruction for English language learners. It was important to understand the background of second language instruction and the theories that have shaped the field. To that end, this course covered each of those areas nicely.
I would like to continue my learning so that I am better able to teach those students who are not fluent in their first language while also supporting their second language development. Where I am teaching, there are several students who are classified as “long term ELLs” and since I work primarily with younger students, I want to ensure that I am helping them to build their literacy skills in both languages. This might mean looking at school-wide approaches rather than just classroom level teaching strategies.
