In this situation, I would first identify what I know to be true about the students home country culture, find out what language or languages are mainly spoken at the house, and ask the parents or other trusted adult near the student if there are any culturally relevant sensitivities, I should maintain. 

once I start getting to know the student in a classroom setting, I would want to create a a way for the student and family to communicate with me quickly/confidentially regarding the students comfort & learning.

Overall, I think the most important thing to do will be to leave my biases out of their education, educate and prepare myself accordingly so that I don’t unintentionally misstep
