My way of alleviating miscommunication with new students from a different culture is done in way different ways.

I first have to find out the background of my student, as it is very important to look at exactly what their cultural beliefs are.

I would then need to find out if they speak or understand English. If not, I would try to search out a student to pair the student with to help in the class.

I would want the parent to sign up on the classroom communication website called "Dojo".  Even though I would be communicating in English, the parent could see it in their own language by hitting a translation button.  It has been very helpful to many of my parents and when they reply back to me, I can also get it translated back into English.

Also, in the classroom, I could use gestures at times to help the student get a better understanding of what I am doing or saying.
