Scenario Response 2
The media center is where I would start. I would venture into learning about their countries' basic beliefs. Including particular religion, gender roles, and academic expectations.
In my first year of teaching, I taught in a community with immigrants, I remember having a very difficult time getting a 4th-grade boy to complete his assignment, however, his twin sister was always prepared and she would attempt to help him, too much. As I was seeking advice from a senior teacher, she explained that in the students’ country, the male relinquishes certain tasks to the female, thus it is common for the sisters to cater to the brothers. In another situation, I had an Asian student that would not look at me when spoken to, for me as a child this was unacceptable. Once again I did an inquiry, and found out, in his culture, it would have been disrespectful to look at me.
These experiences taught me to look into gender roles, child upbringing, religious training, and academic expectations. I also like to meet parents early on to gather information.
As a principal I would have readily available information for the teachers to access should the need arise. I would also have teachers share with each other, what they have learned in previous engagements.
