I would ask the following questions:

  1. What language(s) do you read?- So I know what language to use in Google translate.
  2. What is the best cell phone number to reach you via text? - This allows me to use Google translate to change my contact with the parents to the language they are fluent in. The translator isn't 100% accurate, but it will get close to the actual message.
  3. How well does your child read English? - I teach ELA, and I need to know if they can read English at all or if they can read some, or read it well enough.

Hi Devanne,
I like all of your questions. We do not use Google translate in our school, but it would come in handy! We use "Dojo" as our means of communication with our parents, and they can just select translate and it is translated in their home language. I like your first question, as it would tell a lot about what they speak at home. I would take it a step further, by asking if the Parent would be interested in learning English along side their student.
