Moving Students Into a New Culture

Moving Students Into a New Culture

I first moved to the United States mainland in 1995 to attend college and had a huge culture shock. The students simply had no idea where I was from, which upset me. In the US Virgin Islands as a student, the requirement to pass high school was to take US History, Geography, and the fact; as students, we were asked to learn about the US culture and customs, and there were no classes or requirements for students based in the US mainland to complete. In addition, the students asked if we swung from trees, if I took a boat to Florida and if we had electricity. I was not excited to start my journey on the mainland at all.

I am so sorry that you experienced that. Honestly, I've thought for years that U.S. cultures should be taught alongside the history that students are supposed to be learning about.
