This was a great lesson to teach that there is a difference between feedback and criticism. It also gives a fantastic example to these students on how feedback can both be 1) provided and 2) how it can be accepted. The students saw that Austin’s first iteration of a butterfly was not remotely close to the photograph. The presenter shaped the conversation so that the students didn’t have harmful criticism, but provided comments that would have helped improve upon further iterations of Austin’s work. I try to do the same thing with my students and make sure that any feedback provided to their peers is meant to be constructive, helpful, and encouraging.
