Module 16 Discussion: Reading and the Second Language Learner
Module 16 Discussion
For ELL students, the text should be amplified rather than simplified; what this means as the text includes the original language but includes scaffolding/supports such as embedded definitions and background information. ELL students need opportunity to listen to and speak about the text. The teacher needs to activate prior learning, use prereading strategies, and during-reading strategies (i.e. questions). The teacher should focus on helping the student make inferences, using text structure, and visualizing. The student should be asked to retell and/or summarize the text.
