First I would want to learn as much as possible about the culture. I can do independent research and reach out to organizations and individual from within that culture. Once I found out the appropriate way to communicate, I would reach out to the family to ensure that they knew that their students was welcome and valued in my classroom. I would ask what the family's expectations were for both the school and for me as the teacher. I would make every attempt to establish open lines of communication early on and research the culture to ensure I did not commit any glaring faux pas. If I were administration, I would include ongoing cultural sensitivity training for my faculty, focusing particularly on populations of our school's student body.
