I would hope to have opportunity first of all to meet the family and learn more about them. I would spend some time researching or having conversations with people from their country of origin to learn more about it, and possibly visit their home or a local cultural event if possible. I would provide a inquiry based project related to the student's cultural background so that the class can learn together, and/or the student can teach us something about where he or she is from. I would try to incorporate literature from or about the new student's culture and native language if possible. Differentiate learning and depth of knowledge. Be aware of my own ethnocentric attitudes.
