Focus: Research High-Quality Language Instruction
The following are ten high-quality languages practices according to the Institute of Education Sciences:
- Teach content-specific academic vocabulary daily during content-area classes.
- Select key words for understanding the text.
- Use a variety of vocabulary instructional activities.
- Teach students to use context clues, word parts, cognates, and dictionaries to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words.
- Scaffold content-area learning.
- Small group learning opportunities.
- Preview and review content material in home/native language.
- Have students use their native language in conversation to interpret new content or vocabulary; provide students with definitions of key vocabulary in their native language.
- Assess linguistic and academic progress.
