Scenario Response 3
Scenario Response 3
Differences between the two students:
Student with adequate formal schooling: adequate education in native country, at grade level in reading and writing, developed skills for academic progress, possibility of low scores on standardized assessments in English
Student with limited formal schooling: limited or interrupted education in native country, limited native-language literacy, below grade-level in math, poor achievement in academics
Recommendations to address their separate needs and issues:
- Teach language by implementing authentic tasks when possible
- Communicative approach
- Do not continually correct errors; allow for mistakes
- Make the students feel safe/comfortable regarding learning and taking risks
- Repeat words consistently: hearing, seeing, expressing, intonation
- Visual cues
- Focus on morphology, syntax, semantics, phonology, and pragmatics
