  • 90-minute literacy block for grade 1- Directed Reading Thinking Activity- Great Migrations Butterflies- What is the title? Look at these pictures, what does migration mean? Let's read the chapter titles. What do you think this will be about? Which of these cards go with our book? (card 1- picture of a bean growing, card 2- picture of a butterfly sipping nectar). Let's read this (read a section and work on a graphic organizer)
  • 90-minute literacy block for grade 3- Partner reading- pair students (stronger reader with a weaker reader), the stronger reader will read a short section of the text first (they are the player). The weaker reader will follow along and correct any mistakes when necessary. Then the weaker reader reads the same passage and the stronger reader becomes the coach.
  • 60-minute literacy block for grade 6- Drawing and artwork- Assign a particularly vivid scene from a novel. Have them read the passage. Visualize what they are reading, and then draw their visualization. If drawing is not a strength for them, they could put together a collage that supports the passage.
  • 60-minute literacy block for grade 9- Text Annotation- Give students a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Underline supporting reasons for war, highlight key terms that need explaining, circle words/phrases that speak to our freedoms enjoyed today, and write reflections for each section.
  • 30-minute writing class for grade 11- Select a supporting character from a recently read novel. Develop a story where they become the main character. Start with a beginning, middle, and end idea and then build the story from there.
