I would alleviate cultural miscommunications in a variety of ways including small group assignments for structured cross-cultural interaction, asking the student and family members their important values for understanding behavioral tendencies, providing the student and family members a native language class syllabus handout for their classroom understanding, lastly revise some assignments to allow the student to speak more about their prior culture.
