One of the strategies I use for my ELL students is recommending they watch TV in English. Even if they don't understand everything being said, they will gain an understanding of the gist of what is going on. If the parent is literate (goes back to identifying characteristics of the family, not only the child), books in a foreign language and English can be read at home. The parents help read the foreign language, and then have a recording to go along with the English. Have a simple matching game that can help students work on sight words. Provide a visual dictionary to assist in matching.
