I would consider using prereading discussions before reading the texts.  I would also include visuals or videos that connect with the content of the text and vocabulary so students can discuss what they know about these topics before reading the text.  I think using vocabulary in discussions is also important for students to use, as well as sentence stems so the students get used to knowing how the words fit into the context of a discussion.  Having the text to refer to during the discussion is crucial and helps students find "evidence" for statements that are made about the text.
