In high school social studies, a common final project is a long-term writing assignment. Students have progress monitoring sheets with a timeline and checklist. They create goals with peers in order to improve their writing. The process incorporates peer-review of drafts wherein they provide feedback using sentence starters. We practice writing abstracts (short descriptions of the overall writing project) that can be part of a final presentation. Students perform self-assessments throughout but especially at the end wherein they evaluate their growth and accomplishments. They share which feedback was the most helpful and meaningful.
Some sentence starters for peer-review may include:
- "I think the overall message of your writing is..."
- "The part that was most fascinating to me was..."
- "A part that made me feel confused was..."
