In order to alleviate cultural miscommunications with a new student, I would try to first read about the student's home culture, gestures of greeting, and interactions between authority figures and young people. I might send home a letter to the family to encourage them to share with me about their home, their expectations of school, and how I might help ease the transition. I could model for the whole class how to greet my when the enter the room, how to raise a hand or signal for help, how to submit work, and any interaction between students.
