When reading the material about the stages of language progression the stage that surprised me the most and what I see when I am supporting my teachers in the classroom is the beginning fluency. Students often will speak fluently in the social language but only attempt to use the academic language. In this stage students often have gaps in vocabulary. Having a knowledge of these will help teachers preview academic vocabulary so that students can begin to feel more confident and close the achievement gap.
