Discussion: SIOP
The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is an instructional model that has shown to be an effective method of addressing the academic needs of English Language Learner (ELL) students. The SIOP model is comprised of eight components: Lesson preparation, interaction, building background, practice/ application, comprehensible input, lesson delivery, strategies and review/assessment. SIOP teachers emphasize vocabulary instruction across all areas of the curriculum so students can become better readers, writers, listeners and speakers. Students are provided opportunities to use new vocabulary orally and in writing. Sheltered Instruction has proven to be meet the needs of ELL students in the mainstream classroom.
