Module 6 Discussion: Language and Learning
Language and Learning
One of the strategies that I utilize for a beginning or emergent level ELL student is the use of repetition. In guided reading groups I select books that have pattern and repetition (i.e. “I see a bed, I see a bird, I see a car) with limited repetitive phrases. Students have activities that include similar themes with word order, sentence starters etc. For beginning ELL students I like to use materials that also have pictures in lieu or below the words for increased comprehension. While other students are working on a writing lesson, I may have an ELL student use sentence starters or copy work of words and draw pictures to show comprehension.
