One of the strategies that I utilize for a beginning or emergent level ELL student is the use of repetition.  In guided reading groups I select books that have pattern and repetition (i.e.  “I see a bed, I see a bird, I see a car) with limited repetitive phrases.  Students have activities that include similar themes with word order, sentence starters etc.  For beginning ELL students I like to use materials that also have pictures in lieu or below the words for increased comprehension.  While other students are working on a writing lesson, I may have an ELL student use sentence starters or copy work of words and draw pictures to show comprehension.
