The student who was uprooted from school when a civil war broke out in their home may not have mastery of the home language.  They may have had traumatic experiences associated with school and home.  Their educational resources were most likely limited, and schooling disrupted.   This student likely will have psychological effects that will transmit to all areas of their lives.  They will require opportunities to experience the positive environment that school, teachers, and classmates can provide.  The student that studied extensively in her homeland will have academic skills in primary language required to acquire a second language and may have already been exposed to the new language through schooling.  Formal schooling was likely a positive experience.
