Some of the strategies I would use to alleviate cultural miscommunications for a new student are:

  • Research the student's culture and find ways to either celebrate their customs and/or traditions
  • Make contact with the parents (either meeting them or by phone) and have a translator available (if needed)
  • Pick culturally relevant materials and use them as appropriate
  • Apologize for mistakes and correct the mistake
  • Respect cultural differences (eye contact, mannerisms, voice tone, etc.)
  • Be flexible and allow the student time to adjust
  • Allow my curriculum to be flexible and adaptable for students of all backgrounds (make it level for everyone)
