Module 7: Strategy Reflection
Scaffolding Strategy
I selected "Use Visual Aids" as a scaffolding strategy. I oftentimes, use graphic organizers especially when reading long texts in Reading and many times to teach 5th grade Math concepts. In 5th grade Reading many learning goals involve comparing and contrasting texts or items. Specifically in Math we are currently learning about Quadrilaterals and their attributes. Without the use of visual aids, the concept of Quadrilaterals is so abstract. Students need to visualize the concepts and see what we are comparing and contrasting.
A way I can modify it for use in my classroom is to physically create a Venn Diagram out of plastic or string. Students are more engaged when they have a physical Graphic Organizer versus one that they create on paper. Not only is it visual, it is also 3-D. This is an extremely useful scaffolding strategy.
