It is more effective for ELL students to develop social interaction skills before focusing heavily on mastering new vocabulary. When students feel comfortable socially, they learn more and participate in class activities. ELLs also tend to benefit from peer coaching in pairs rather than larger groups, as the informal setting reduces anxiety and creates a more supportive environment for language acquisition. As students build confidence through social interactions, they develop language acquisition skills especially when they receive constructive feedback from peers. In contrast, a formal and cognitively demanding learning environment may increase the likelihood of errors in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary which can negatively affect students’ confidence, both socially and academically.
