If the goal in reforming student groups is to acclimate them socially and challenge them academically, Heterogeneous Groups might be the answer. Mixed ability and racial diversity groups can create an environment of learning on a whole different level. Learning from each other and hopefully challenging each other to think differently, offering different perspectives and opportunities to grow as individuals.

In cooperative learning I would be embracing the social-interdependence theory. The students would be working cooperatively vs. competitively. The students should create more productivity, better personal relationships which in turn creates a healthier state of mind.
