Another method that I could try using is that of activating prior knowledge before reading. Although this student can decode words, he may not necessarily be making sense of what he is reading. Thus, I would prepare him for reading by going through the vocabulary, talking about the subject matter, utilizing images, and linking the text to his existing knowledge.
Another set of methods that I would use is that of metacognitive strategies. For example, I would teach him how proficient readers pause, think, reread, and make connections when reading, and then practice these processes together in a group or individual setting.
In my opinion, this strategy will work well with this student because the problem does not appear to lie in his ability to read. Instead, the larger issue lies in understanding and comprehending what he is reading.
