It altered my view of language acquisition in the ELL classroom. Previously, I assumed total immersion in English would be best in terms of time, but I have learned that working on developing the first language will make it easier for students to succeed academically in the future. Many times, ELL students understand concepts well but have difficulties expressing them in English.

Additionally, research revealed that it is beneficial for students to be in mainstream classrooms along with receiving language support. Interactions with other students who speak English fluently and being taught age-appropriate subject matter help develop their self-confidence and academic language skills.

Moreover, I found out that language development is not solely an ESOL teacher's job. All teachers need to incorporate academic vocabulary development, comprehension, and discussion skills lessons into regular classes.

Finally, the research showed me that schools should care more about making sure students get necessary academic support rather than spending too much time trying to determine for how long they will remain ELLs. Sometimes, students might sound proficient in English, but lack appropriate academic language skills.
