What required the most thought in planning this lesson was deciding whether students should identify the parts of a book orally or visually. This was especially challenging for my nonverbal students, as it required careful consideration of how to assess their understanding in a meaningful and accessible way. Because this lesson was a reteach of previously taught material, I initially expected students to be able to identify the title, author, and illustrator. However, since these concepts were introduced earlier in the year, it became clear that many students were still struggling to retain and apply this knowledge. Additionally, when inferencing what the story might be about, many students relied heavily on the illustrations. While pictures are a helpful support, they do not always accurately reflect the story’s main idea, which caused confusion for some students. This highlighted the need for continued practice, repeated exposure, and multiple ways for students to demonstrate their understanding.
