Mod 17 Discussion: Culturally Responsive Teaching
Culturally Responsive Teaching
There is a section in our social studies weekly that introduces different cultures in the lesson. I use this section to introduce my cultural project I have students do every year. The social studies weekly lesson focuses on Cinco De Mayo and the festivals that come with it. So, students get to see why that day is celebrated in a different culture than ours. It allows them to learn about the "Day of the Dead" festival. I use this section for them to do a project on their heritage, and this allows the parents to work with them at home and teach them some traditions from their family heritage. I think this project touches on all 7 of the culturally responsive teaching strategies. It allows the parents/guardians even grandparents to teach the students not just the teacher facilitating all lessons.
