Scenario Response 2
mod 4 scenario 2
One or two intervention approaches from this module that would best support this intermediate ELL student are scaffolding through shared reading with think-alouds and the use of multimodal and audio-supported texts.
The module explains that reading is a social experience connected to culture, identity, and meaning. Even though this student decodes at nearly grade level, his difficulty understanding and responding to basic ideas suggests that he needs support with comprehension rather than word recognition. I would implement shared reading with pre-reading activities, teacher think-alouds, and guided discussion. Before reading, I would activate background knowledge and introduce key vocabulary using student-friendly language and visuals. During reading, I would model how to question the text, clarify meaning, and make connections aloud. After reading, the student would respond orally or through guided activities to ensure understanding before moving to independent work. This approach aligns with the module’s emphasis on scaffolding, clarification, and providing resources in language students understand.
In addition, the module highlights the importance of new media and recommends allowing students to listen to audio versions of text. I would provide audio-supported texts paired with print, along with visuals or short videos related to the content. This multimodal approach helps the student stay engaged and supports comprehension by connecting spoken language, images, and text. As noted in the module, digital print, audio, and other media are powerful tools for closing achievement gaps among struggling readers.
Together, these approaches are well matched to this learner because they focus on building meaning, engagement, and understanding while honoring the student’s developing fluency and language needs.
